Need advice on best places where a young couple (no kids) should rent a 1or2-bedroom apartment in WashingtonDC?

My wife and I have just moved from Europe to DC and we're currently looking for an apartment to rent for 1 year.

Our budget is $1.4-1.6k/month and we are looking for a 1- or 2-bedroom apartment in a VERY safe area and one which also allows her to commute to the American University Campus without having to walk a great deal after leaving the nearest subway/metro station.

We saw a decent, unfurnished apartment on Connecticut Avenue today - for $1,400 - located just a 15-min walk away from the subway station but we're really not sure how good/safe that neighbourhood actually is. Can anyone please help us and shed some light from your good/bad experiences there?

ANY further insight into where to rent in DC (city and/or outskirts) is welcome!!!

PS (additional info): we have no kids and no pets either. She needs to commute to AU Washington College of Law (4801 Massachusetts Av. NW, Washington, DC) and I will need to commute to GU Clarendon Campus (3101 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA).

Many Thanks in advance,

Your school location is very easy - GU's campus is directly across the street from Clarendon metro stop on the Orange line. Your wife's is trickier. Her closest metro is Friendship Heights on the Red line.

If you wanted to split the commutes, that would put you near DuPont circle (which isn't in your budget). In Virginia, you could look in the Rosslyn, Clarendon, Arlington and Fort Myer neighborhoods, which are all relatively easy commute, safer than the city, and generally cheaper.

Check out the metro's website (www.wmata.com) before you book anything to see how close you are to both places. They have a very good trip planner that you can even restrict how much she has to walk to see how close you can get by metro.
