';What techniques does the author of a prescribed use to position the reader to admire certain human characteristics but condemn others?';

The text is Eva Luna by Isabel Allende

it means what things does the narrator tell you that makes you like a certain character. and what things does the narrator tell you about certain characters to make you dislike them. for example

Susy is beautiful, smart, and witty. Shes really popular and has alot of friends. I cant help but like her

Susy is pretty but a little busy. She is quite and likes to hang out with the drama geeks. She also chews gum really loudly behind me in math class

Good writer, I don't know that story though... Those essay questions are worded to be confusing sometimes. It's basically just asking how does Allende present the story so the reader feels a certain way about character traits. If I knew the story I could explain that better, but...

I'm just assuming the point of view of the story might be part of her technique, for example if it's in the first person, the ideas of the narrator are going to be presented in a more intimate manner, and being closer to that character the reader may develop the same attitude towards human characteristics as that character.

I would bet her diction is a technique as well, like if she sprinkles in words that are suggestive of a certain mood or attitude...

You should be able to figure it out, just read the story over and over. If you still can't, ask your teacher for a little help.
